Ross County Health District Birth Records

The Ross County Health District Vital Statistics Division is at 475 Western Avenue, Suite 5A, Chillicothe, Ohio 45601. Call 740-779-9630 for help. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The office has birth records going back to 1888, which is earlier than the standard 1908 start date found at most Ohio health departments.

Only certified copies are available. Ohio stopped issuing uncertified copies on July 1, 2003 under House Bill 95. To get a copy in person, bring a valid ID and provide the full name on the record, the birth date, and the parents' names. Mail requests work too. Write a letter with those details, include payment, and add a self-addressed stamped envelope. The office also has a genealogy research room where you can look through records yourself. The court holds birth records from 1867 to 1908, the period when Ohio law required county-level registration.

Older records for birth, death, marriage, wills, and estates sit in the Archives Division of the probate court.
