Hamilton County Public Health Records

Hamilton County Public Health is at 250 William Howard Taft Road, 2nd Floor, Cincinnati, OH 45219. Phone is (513) 946-7800. Email is Vitals@hamilton-co.org. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The office issues certified birth certificates for anyone born in Ohio from 1909 to now. It also handles death certificates for deaths in Hamilton County from 1909 forward.

Each certified birth certificate costs $24.00. Death certificates cost $27.00. The office takes cash, check, money order, and debit or credit cards. Credit card payments have a convenience fee of $2.00 or 2.39%, whichever is more. Same-day service is available for walk-in customers. You can also place orders online through their website. Online orders are ready the next business day for pickup. If you do not pick up within two weeks, the office mails it to the address you gave them.

This office covers Hamilton County outside the cities of Cincinnati, Norwood, and St. Bernard. Those cities run their own health departments for vital records.

This office handles birth certificates for births within Cincinnati city limits from 1908 to now. The fee is about $21.50 per copy. Same-day service is available for walk-in customers with a valid ID. The office takes cash, check, money order, and credit cards, though card payments may have extra fees. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Hamilton County Probate Court Birth Records

The Hamilton County Probate Court is at the William Howard Taft Center, 230 East Ninth Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202. Hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. The File Room and Historical Research division is on the 9th Floor. Call 513-946-3598. The court holds birth and death records from 1863 to 1908, which is further back than most Ohio counties since statewide registration did not start until 1908.

The court keeps a typed index for birth records from 1863 to 1908. It is not a searchable database, but it makes looking things up much easier than going through raw ledger pages. Along with birth records, the probate court holds marriage records from 1852, guardianship records from 1852, naturalization records from 1856 to about 1941, and probate journals from 1791 to 1891. The journals from 1791 to 1837 are published online at the probate court website. Birth registrations and corrections from 1941 to 1994 are also on file.

The Ohio History Connection does not hold Hamilton County birth microfilm. You must contact the probate court for pre-1908 records.

Hamilton County Birth Certificate Fees

Hamilton County Public Health charges $24.00 per certified birth copy. The Cincinnati Health Department charges about $21.50. VitalChek adds a processing fee on top of the local rate. Under Ohio Revised Code Section 3705.24, the state sets a minimum of twelve dollars per copy, with five dollars going to the state general fund.

The state office in Columbus charges $21.50 per copy. You can order from the Ohio Department of Health online or by mail. Online orders take about three weeks. Mail orders need a check or money order made out to "Treasury, State of Ohio" and go to PO Box 15098, Columbus, Ohio 43215-0098. State processing for mail orders runs four to six weeks.

The Ohio Birth Index from 1908 to 1998 is available through Ancestry. Hamilton County was created on January 4, 1790, as an original county in the Northwest Territory. It is one of Ohio's oldest counties.

The Hamilton County Genealogical Society (HCGS) has free online resources including indexes to obituaries from Hamilton County newspapers from 1827 to 1920, church death indexes from 1890 to 1899, and war veteran burial indexes. The Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library at 800 Vine Street has one of the top genealogy collections in the country. Their Genealogy and Local History Department holds over 12,000 family histories, complete federal census records for Hamilton County from 1820 to 1940, Ohio death certificates from 1908 to 1953 on microfilm, and Cincinnati birth and death records from 1865 to 1912. They offer free access to Ancestry Library Edition, HeritageQuest, and Fold3.
