Washington County Health Department Records

The Washington County Health Department provides certified copies of birth and death records from 1908 to the present. Each certified copy costs $25.00. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. You can pay online with a debit or credit card, but a processing fee applies to card payments.

Mail-in requests need a completed application form, a self-addressed stamped envelope, and payment by check or money order made out to the Washington County Health Department. The health department is in Marietta, Ohio. Since 2010, all Ohio health departments can issue birth certificates for any Ohio birth through the statewide electronic system. So even if you were born in a different county, Washington County can pull your record.

For births before 1908, the health department will send you to the Washington County Probate Court. Those older records are not in the electronic system.

The Washington County Probate Court maintains birth and death records from 1867 to 1908. The court is in the Washington County Courthouse in Marietta. Along with vital records, the probate court handles estate administration, guardianships, marriage licenses, and other court matters.

For birth and death certificates from 1908 forward, the probate court will refer you to the Washington County Health Department. The court's historical records are useful for genealogy research, especially for families with roots in southeast Ohio going back to the 1800s.
